As we progress through the Build a Better Marriage Series, it’s time to slow down this weekend and remember the simple pleasures in life.
We live in a world filled with the latest and greatest gadget designed to bring adventure and excitement to your life.
But it’s often the simplest things in life that provide the most pleasure.
Here’s a few of my simple pleasures:
- Watching the sunset
- Walks with my wife
- Playing in the rain
- Wrestling with my kids
Your turn:
What are the simple pleasures in your life?
See you in the comments.

Being cuddled up on the couch, watching a movie (without feeling the need to talk… enjoying the silence).
Cooking for her.
Seeing her worship God (in song, through work etc).
Ambling walks in the countryside, late evening.
Snuggling in bed on Sunday mornings.
Playing a friendly but competitive board game.
Jeep rides in the mountains with a picnic by the stream.
Eating a meal together.
Reading together in bed.
Staying in bed together before we start the day.
When it is very cold and we can warm each other up under the covers
Sharing a cup of coffee.
Holding hands.
Notes on the bathroom mirror.
Snuggling in bed. Feeling his body against mine. When we are fighting, cracking up together, realizing how stupid we’re being. Seeing him break into a dance or a jiggy just because. Snuggling on the couch together. Enjoying a nice cup of wine with him.
When we moved into the Love Bungalow we had no furniture or anything. But we DID have a fireplace, a bag of marshmallows, and some fondue forks.
That marshmallow roast is hands down one of my favorite simple pleasures!
Burping contests. Nuff said–it doesnt take much for us! haha
* sipping coffee with the hub while sitting under the trees on our porch swing
* going for a canoe ride
* being creative making something pretty
* full body hug
* waking up in the middle of the night with the hub stroking my hair
*Letting the kids climb in bed with us early on Saturday mornings
*Family walks around the neighborhood
*My wife’s hot cocoa after a cold afternoon sledding in the winter
*Playing baseball with my son and coloring with my daughter
*BBQ with friends
*Time alone spent bowhunting
*Writing on my blog and enjoying the creative process
I love all the simple things…they are what make life worth living!
Lovely post man.
My mother and her husband have this great tradition they’ve kept up over the years and I think it really helps keep perspective and make us wonder in gratitude at all we truely have.
It’s called “three small things”. Each day when they’re having a quite drink at sunset (they’re retired so they have time for this, but dinnertime could be great for it too) each of them shares three small things they appreciated about the day. The smaller the better.
This makes you realise how much beauty there is that we never see because we’re caught up in “the big things” (pffft). Reminds me of this scene from American Beauty.
plant a tree together – monthly. it helps the ecology and brings out good conversations.
