Today Simple Marriages is joining over 8,000 other bloggers and websites for Blog Action Day 2008!

The topic: Poverty. For some great resources or more information, check out Learn About Poverty.

If you’re fortunate enough to be living in an industrialized country, poverty may mean you live below a certain level of income and must be creative in order to make ends meet. Outside these countries, poverty means the difference between eating one day or not, living another day or not. It’s a problem all of us should be more aware of and working towards a solution.

So how does simplifying marriage tie into alleviating poverty? Make it a family maxim.

As a family, join in an effort to help out others around you and in the world. This could be volunteering at a shelter in your community, giving money to a cause, or giving up your career and heading overseas to work on the front lines with those impacted most by poverty.

As for helping out in your community or beyond, here’s a few ideas.

Go to the local shelter or community outreach center and give your time this weekend. Prepare some sack lunches and drive to the corners where some homeless men and women beg for food. What ever you choose to do, include your kids. What a great learning opportunity for children!

If you want to help out a few larger causes, check these out.

Train for Humanity: The mission – combine fitness with social media and help empower people for social good while creating a humanitarian movement. They believe:

getting fit + social media + blogging = social good

They hope to raise funds and awareness for organizations that help alleviate the pain and suffering of children, orphans, and refugees who have been affected or displaced due to genocide or civil war.

Hands on Disaster Response: A US-based, volunteer-driven, non-profit organization dedicated to timely disaster response and relief. They strive to provide hands-on relief to survivors of natural disasters with maximum speed and minimum bureaucracy. Their projects focus on applying volunteer resources and expertise to disaster-affected communities around the world.

No matter what you choose to do, do something!

Do you have some other ideas or organizations to help? Spread the word in the comments.
