A Scotsman’s Journey

Editor’s Note: This was written last week while on my trip through the UK. This is being posted a week after it was written, upon returning home.

I am writing this while sitting at a sidewalk cafe in Stirling, Scotland (actually I am sitting at the cafe on the right side of the street just past the pink banner in the picture). The scene around me is exactly how I pictured a European city cafe would look and feel. Narrow streets filled with shops housed in ancient buildings. This trip has been a whirlwind of sites and history.

In nine days, I’ll have traveled to eight different cities. All of them with histories dating back to the 1300s and some even older.

Here’s a brief log of our journey through Scotland and the UK. Flew into London where I got a 24-hour plunge to see as much as I could. Hopped on the train and traveled to Edinburgh. Then went to Newtongrange (my father’s hometown as a child), St. Andrews, Stirling, Glasgow, York, and Manchester. We are traveling by train and bus so I’ll get to see a lot of the countryside.

As part of this excursion, I have been trying to be more present throughout the journey. Read more »

Welcome To The Simple Marriage World

There are many new readers who’ve dropped by from Zen Habits. I’d like to take a quick moment and say hello. I’m currently writing this little welcome from a coffee shop in Edinburgh, Scotland, where I’m on an adventure through my family’s homeland with my father (so imagine hearing this entire post with a Scottish accent).

The main belief behind The Simple Marriage Project – life is choice. Therefore I choose to:

  1. Grow deeper Spiritually
  2. Live simply and passionately
  3. Experience a marriage fully alive
  4. Live in community with others

Please come on in and make yourself at home in our little fellowship. For more popular posts, refer to the top ten on the right and/or check out the bottom section.

Zen Habits’ Take On A Simple Marriage

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, you may not have heard of Zen Habits. If you’ve logged on to the Internet within the past year, then without a doubt you’ve heard of Leo Babauta.

Not only is Leo behind the incredibly successful blog Zen Habits (over 60K subscribers), he launched Write To Done (a blog for writers) earlier this year as well as Web Warrior Tools (an e-book publishing venture).

Today I am pleased to present an interview Simple Marriages had with Leo and his wife Eva. Hope you enjoy. Read more »

Ask The Readers: A 24-Hour London Plunge

I leave Sunday night for a 9 day trip to Scotland with my father. The travel around Scotland will be planned as we go along by my father and I. At this point, the priority of things I want to see consist of 1) family roots and places my father went to school while there as a child, 2) Scottish history, specifically some William Wallace stuff as well as the highlands, and 3) anything else we decide to go see.

I fly into London, where I’ll have about 24 hours to see the sights before hopping on the train to Scotland where I will hook up with my dad. So this week’s question (nothing like waiting until the last minute):

What are some things I should be sure to see while in London?

Bear in mind, this is my first time to Europe so I will want to see some of the mainstays. St. Paul’s Cathedral, Parliament, etc. What else should I try to take in along the way? Read more »

Art of Manliness’ Take On A Simple Marriage

Brett and Kate McKay of The Art of Manliness have rocketed up the blog-o-sphere this year. In an effort to learn more about the people behind the blogs, here is a brief interview Simple Marriages conducted with them recently.

The hope for these interviews are for the rest of us to get a glimpse of life behind the blog scenes and perhaps a few nuggets of information we can apply to our lives and marriages. Read more »

Simple Marriage Plans To Dominate The World!

Have you ever had an idea that only grew larger in scope as you began working on it? In January 2008, The Simple Marriage Project began as a way to share articles and ideas about marriage and life. Specifically getting more out of marriage and life.

There are far too many couples and people for that matter who have settled on life as is. They’ve resigned themselves to a life of monotony and schedules. Moving mindlessly from one activity to the next. Life is determined more by other’s expectations than their own design.

Last month I came across Chris Guillebeau’s Brief Guide To World Domination. After reading through his brief guide, worth the read by the way, I’m developing a strategy for how the Simple Marriage Project can dominate the world. Not as an unruly, power hungry dictator; but as a marriage movement. Read more »

Best of Simple Marriages, June 2008

July is already upon us and the year is half over. June was another good month here at The Simple Marriage Project. And again, this is thanks to you loyal readers. The numbers continue to climb as new readers find us each day. Thanks for helping spread the word.

I recently read Chris Guillebeau’s Brief Guide To World Domination, (if you haven’t downloaded it yet, follow the link and read it, it’s great) which has inspired me to think much bigger than the original plan with this project. I would like to make a blatant plea for your assistance in spreading the Simple Marriage message as we strive to take over the world! More on this later.

In case you’ve missed anything this past month, here are a few of the best posts in June. Enjoy. Read more »
