@ Kate- It's great to see the change that can happen when we eliminate things in our life that are not working towards the life we want. Glad to see you are in a happy phase of life. I encourage you to keep it up, since it will be opposed by those around you. Many times, it seems the people around us want us to be life them. They pressure us to get back in line. So your happiness may go against their facade of happiness, thus leaving you to decide if you stay the course and they change or you change back to fit in with them.

Your family and friends will notice. Stay the course. It gets even better!

This "experiment" reminds me of a Chinese proverb that I keep close at hand - "Keep a green tree in your heart and a singing bird will come." Thanks for the encouragement to live life well.

"When complaining is decreased or eliminated, those around will benefit, but not as much as you." These words are so true. For the last month, I have been making an effort to give up complaining. Of course I catch myself from time to time, but, overall, the effort has been a success. While I'm not sure how much difference this has made to my family or friends, I am happier than I can remember being for quite a while.

I have a friend who eternally keeps complaining. Its sometimes so difficult being her friend. Every time I call her the conversation somehow drifts towards how miserable her current life is and the problems she has!

You are right in that people will complain and make up excuses as a way of avoiding responsibility for something. Reminds me of the mindset book. But I think people complain the most (not as an excuse) when they feel powerless.

Ok, I'll say it, I HATE MY JOB! Right now I am powerless in that I have a contract and have to finish it out. Until it ends, I keep having to go sit in my boss' office and hear how awful I am. I get to do this on Wednesday afternoon. Not only that but I got another email today where she has already scheduled the next beating on March 11th. I want to complain. I don't like my job but I don't have a choice. It is brutal listening to her over and over again rip me to shreds. I think she gets some sadistic power thrill from it. It's funny, I've already had 4 people wanting me to work for them in their "department" when they found out I was leaving. So I think that is what complaining is all about. Feeling powerless. Now the gossip thing I think, is a little different. I think that happens when people use others to feel powerful. Almost the same but the angle is a bit different.

I have found it very difficult to quit complaining. You're right. It isn't pretty. I'm sure there is a 12-step program out there somewhere to help people like you and me work through this addiction. Until then, I'll keep on keeping on and starting the 21 days over and over and over.

Maybe there should be a time out chair where you have to go and sit for a while and do nothing but complain the entire time you sit there. Hum. Just a thought!
