OK, What if you are feeling bogged down by your spouse putting himself down? It is really a drag and what I hate the most about it is I start to believe him. I don't want to do that. I wish he would just stop that stuff. It is a downer for me.

I know some people think if you were meant to be a couple, your relationship would be great just because. It shouldn't take any work or effort. I am married to one that use to think that. Those were practically the words out of his mouth. I think it was after I started changing me that he followed and now things are really good. So if you think things can't change if you're the only one that's changing, just keep on intentionally with the changes you are making. It will alter the equilibrium in the relationship and your spouse will change as well. It can't be stopped. You have changed the dynamics and he'll respond.

No one would drive a car for years and years and never give it routine maintenance. Can you imagine what shape your car would be in if you never checked the air in the tires, changed out the oil, or gave it a tune up? If you treated your car like that people would think you were a fool when they passed you stranded on the highway scratching your head wondering what went wrong. Why don't we look at our marriages like that? Why is that version of "maintenance" difficult to value?

Corey, I will take to heart your points above and continue to be intentional with my marriage. If your readers are feeling like this is just not possible for them, let me encourage them to hang in there. Take it one day at a time. Change in your relationship takes a while to blossom but I assure you spring is coming and the fragrance is oh so sweet!
