  1. If you are married to a relaxed artistic person, and you are not naturally orderly yourself, you may find that trying to be overly orderly will only add stress. Storing things out of sight only works for couples with really good memories for small details. :)

  2. Reading your post makes me guilty. My home is very disorganized and oftentimes I gave no time to attend to it. Perhaps I should consider this important thing on my daily schedule. :-)

‘…brush your teeth while eating Oreos.’ What an apt description of cleaning with kids!

This post is so true. Over the past year I have really noticed that the quality of my marriage seems to be directly related to the cleanliness and organization of my home. Although I’m not sure if I can ever reach minimalist status, I will definitely strive to pare down as much as possible for the sake of my relationships with my entire family.

Thanks for a great post. I will definitely be ear-marking this as one of my favourites!

This is where I really struggle. I am the clutter queen. I have bright red walls and busy patterned furniture but I love it. Not the clutter though. I hate that. My last kiddo is about to leave the nest and when he does, I will purge big time. I have already started really but the video rockers will go with him to college or in the dump!

  5. Perfect timing! I am going through our small 2 bedroom mobile home this upcoming week purging clothes, toys, decor, and more. This gives me some guidelines of where to focus first. Thank you!

  6. My wife and I have put together a nice uncluttered apartment. Unfortunately for us, I have a tendency to be clutter-ey, so I have to work to keep from leaving a trail as I go about my day.
As I’m working on paring down my possessions, though, I have noticed that my life is becoming less stressful. I don’t have to dig through as many clothes to decide what to wear (especially since I just got rid of all the ones I never wore anyway). It’s easier to find whatever I am looking for since I don’t have as much stuff to search through.

As a portrait artist, I first thought about Minimalist Art while reading ZenHabits and nmlist.com
“What would make up a minimalist portrait?” I wondered to myself.
This is what I came up with: http://bit.ly/cYKf3S – a portrait of Leo.

(This is not meant as an ad of any kind. It is a concept that I struggled with for a couple of months and finally came up with a happy result. I just wanted to show that there is a minimalist option out there, for various kinds of art, not just color fields and such.)

  7. While I agree that clutter is bad and simplifying is better, I don’t think that everything bright and beautiful has to be defined as “visual clutter”. Less is more, but it doesn’t all have to be plain colored and beige in order to be simple. Some people (myself included) would go a little crazy without a little pattern, color, bright and exciting items in our homes. Un-cluttered and simple doesn’t have to be plain to be calming. Some of it is personal taste!

  8. Oh man. Order is not my strong point. I think you’re right that emphasizing order and getting rid of clutter would probably make my life less stressful. Thanks for all the tips and ideas . . . with these lists, achieving more order in our home seems a little more possible.

My old high school volleyball coach used to tell us that our personal life would reflect how our bedrooms looked. We always had to clean them before a game. If only I could keep my mini van as clean as my house 8-)

  10. Great ideas to de-clutter, but my problem is deciding what to do with the stuff to be gotten rid of. We donate a lot of things, but what can you do with sentimental handmad items like afghans and crayon drawings from many years ago?

  1. [...] Start with your home. Clean. Declutter. Organize. This will create a home base to launch your day with more energy and a comfortable environment to return to in the evening. Then apply cleanliness to your desk, office, or work space. Then your calendar. If you apply this virtue to every area of your life, you’ll soon begin to feel lighter, more energetic, and more purposeful. Be not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents common or unavoidable.
